KATHAKALI, southern Indian dance theatre, is regarded in India as a "complete art", combining dance, mime, music and poetry. The stories of this theatre tell of the great myths of India and set the scene for clashes between the forces of darkness and light ; this theatre touches on mankind beyond the stage and forms related to Indian culture. The actor speaks with the whole body, except for speech : the feet, hands, chest, eyes, face. The singing and percussion support them, while the costumes and makeup plunge the actor and the spectator into a fascinating world.
