Carolan’s Dream is an encounter between the musicians of Garlic Bread and the de l’Hostel Dieu, a baroque music ensemble from Lyon. This show features original arrangements of music by Turlough O’Carolan, Irish harpist and itinerant poet. Somewhere between traditional and more intricate music, the imaginary world of O’Carolan is located at the crossroads between dream-state Irish literature and the cosmopolitan music of the English occupation. It is this cultural duality, this blend of inspirations and references, that we wanted to highlight. O’Carolan’s music reflects his diverse and ever changing moods : lamenting for a deceased friend, nostalgia for a lost love, a fairytale of a fugitive’s dream... Only a heightened sensitivity such as that of O’Carolan could turn into a sublime quest that broken destiny, perpetual wandering, and a desperate struggle for a better life...
